Islamabad: Federal government has removed Chairman Higher Education Commission (HEC) Dr. Tariq Banuri from his position.

According to details, Dr. Banuri has been removed almost a year before the expiry of his term.
A formal notification has also been issued in this regard which states “In terms of sub-section (5), read with sub-section (5A), of Section 6 of Higher Education Commission Ordinance, 2002, as amended vide Higher Education Commission (Amendment) Ordinance, 2021, Dr. Tariq Danuri has ceased to be the Chairperson, Higher Education Commission forthwith and is accordingly removed from the said post, with immediate effect".
Banuri was appointed as the chairman of education commission by former premier Shahid Khaqan Abbasi in May 2018 during the tenure of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). He was set to retire in May 2022.
Government has reduced the tenure of the HEC chairperson to two years through a new presidential ordinance.
It is pertinent to mention here that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had begun to take action against the HEC Chairman over corruption, misuse of powers and illegal appointments.
