New Delhi: NR Narayana Murthy, Indian billionaire— the founder of software giant Infosys— and father-in-law of Britain’s next Prime Minister Rishi Sunak congratulated his son-in-law as he exuded confidence that he “will do his best for the people of the United Kingdom”.

The 42-year-old, who traces his roots to India, will be Britain's first prime minister of colour and its youngest leader in modern times.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Rishi Sunak on Monday and said he is looking forward to working closely together on global issues.

"Warmest congratulations @RishiSunak! As you become UK PM, I look forward to working closely together on global issues, and implementing Roadmap 2030. Special Diwali wishes to the 'living bridge' of UK Indians, as we transform our historic ties into a modern partnership," Modi tweeted.

Rishi's wife Akshata Murthy is an Indian citizen, with a stake of 0.93% in Infosys valued at about $721 million, and the couple's wealth has been a divisive issue for the British public.

Revelations that she had not been paying British tax on her foreign income through her "non-domiciled" status - available to foreign nationals who do not see Britain as their permanent home - had hurt Sunak ahead of his earlier race for the top job.

Later, Akshata said she would start to pay British tax on her global income.
