Int’l Day of Persons with Disabilities being observed

International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) is being observed today (Saturday), to raise awareness regarding the responsibilities towards differently-abled persons and bring positive changes in their lives.

This year's theme of the day is "Transformative solutions for inclusive development: the role of innovation in fueling an accessible and equitable world".

The day is a global observance celebrated every year on December 3 with a motive to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in society.

It focuses on the challenges faced by persons with a disability during the COVID-19 pandemic and to ensure their inclusive, accessible, and sustainable future.

Meanwhile, the National Assembly of Pakistan will commemorate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities at Parliament House, today.

History

The annual observance of IDPD was proclaimed in 1992 by United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution 47/3 with an aim to increase awareness of the issues faced by persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.

In 2006, the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) adopted. The main purpose was to increase the participation of disabled people in society—ending discrimination towards them by creating equal opportunities.

Nearly 7 billion or approximately 15% of the world’s population, live with some form of disability.

As per research, 80% of the total disabled population live in developing countries.
