KP imposes Section 144 in Peshawar to tackle terror uptick
The provincial government took swift action with section 144 in Peshawar, in a bid to deter threats of terrorism.
Peshawar: The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Saturday announced the imposition of Section 144 in Peshawar for 10 days, in the wake of a recent Police Lines suicide blast that claimed the atleast 102 lives.
Peshawar’s district administration has imposed Section 144 in the city and barred gatherings of five or more people.
According to an official notification, the decision to impose the section was taken in view of the deteriorating security situation in the province; and to address the ongoing law and order situation in the area.
The section would be enforced to ensure the safety of citizens and to prevent any further loss of life, read notification.
Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code in Pakistan is a legal provision that gives the government the power to impose restrictions on gatherings and movements in a given area, in the interests of public safety and security.
It is often used to prevent and control public disorder, riots, or other similar acts of violence.
The section allows for the imposition of curfew, ban on assembly of people, and regulation of movement of individuals and vehicles.
In the meantime, the government has urged citizens to cooperate with the police and other law enforcement personnel in maintaining peace and order in the region.
