President Alvi sets April 9 for by-polls in Punjab , KPK
The President has given the date after the Election Commission of Pakistan refused to attend meeting at the presidency
Islamabad: President Arif Alvi on Monday announced elections date for by-polls in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtun Khawa.
President Alvi has announced the election date in accordance with Section 57-A of the Election Act, 2017, urging the Election Commission to prepare the polling schedule under Section 57 (2) of Elections Act, 2017.
He also noted that there are no legal impediments to exercising the authority under Section 57-1, as no judicial restraining orders have been issued.
According to the Constitution and the law, the election cannot be delayed for more than 90 days.
“Please refer to my letter dated 08th February, 2023 wherein Election Commission of Pakistan was advised to immediately announce the date for general elections for Provincial Assemblies of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Subsequently, Chief Election Commissioner was invited vide letter of even number dated 17th February, 2023 for meeting on 20th February, 2023 at 11:00 AM for consultation, in terms of Section 57 (1) of Elections Act, 2017, to announce the date for the general elections of the aforementioned Assemblies,” the letter read.
