Titan Submersible: ‘Banging sounds’ heard, rise hopes in search efforts
Canadian aircraft detected banging sounds which continued for four hours later.
Newfoundland: As the search for the missing ‘OceanGate Expeditions’ Titan submersible intensifies, a glimmer of hope emerges with the reported detection of “banging sounds” in the search area.
A Canadian aircraft, equipped with underwater detection capabilities, detected the recurring sounds every 30 minutes, leading to a relocation of the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) operations in an attempt to investigate further.
The US Coast Guards confirmed the development and stated that while the ROV searches have not yielded any positive results yet, they continue to explore the origin of the noises.
The data collected has been shared with US Navy experts for further analysis, which will inform future search plans.
Internal email updates obtained by Rolling Stone and sent to the Department of Homeland Security reveal that a Canadian P-3 aircraft deployed sonobuoys, which reported a contact near the distress position.
The P-3 detected banging sounds and deployed additional sonar, which continued to pick up the sounds four hours later.
The specific cause and timing of the banging sounds remain undisclosed, but the multi-agency and multi-government effort is actively expanding its search operations.
Time is of the essence as the divers on board the submersible have less than 30 hours of oxygen remaining.
Canadian P-3 aircraft detected underwater noises in the search area. As a result, ROV operations were relocated in an attempt to explore the origin of the noises. Those ROV searches have yielded negative results but continue. 1/2
