Facebook to cease news sharing
Facebook to stop news sharing as journalistic institutions denied payments.


California: Following the approval of the Payment of Dues Act in Canada, Facebook will discontinue news sharing on its platform.
Facebook has stated that under a new law in Canada, social media companies will be compelled to pay publishers for news content.
Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, has announced that it will restrict access to news on Facebook and Instagram for all users in Canada.
This decision comes as the country's parliament has passed legislation to mandate payment to publishers by major internet companies.
Known as the Online News Act, the law was approved by the Senate on Thursday and is expected to be officially enacted soon.
In a released statement, Meta stated, "Today, we are confirming that prior to the enforcement of the Online News Act, access to news on Facebook and Instagram will be discontinued for all users in Canada."
