Horana: With 20 elephant deaths and a significant number of wildlife fatalities caused by plastic consumption, Sri Lankan politicians are set to strengthen pollution laws.
However, conservationists remain skeptical, pointing out that previous bans were frequently disregarded.
Over the past decade, the harmful effects of single-use plastics have led to countless animal deaths and environmental damage.
To address the issue, authorities plan to enact a new law banning various single-use plastic items within the coming weeks.
Items such as cutlery, cups, drinking straws, and plastic flower garlands will be prohibited.
Anil Jasinghe, the country's top environment official, emphasized the need for raising awareness about responsible plastic use.
While campaigners welcome renewed efforts to combat plastic pollution, they stress the importance of effective implementation and enforcement of the new laws.
