Lahore: The Punjab government on Sunday has issued a red alert in the province Punjab as Pakistan was devastated by floods.
Punjab interim information minister Amir Mir stated during a news conference that the Punjab cabinet emergency meeting examined the flood situation.
He claimed that additional flooding will occur in the Punjab if India had severe rainfall. In the event of significant rains, the Sutlej and Ravi rivers' water levels will rise enormously.
The minister of information asked those who live close to riverbanks to leave their houses and relocate to a safe location.
In addition, he cautioned that if India experienced excessive rains, Shadara could sink as it did in 1988.
Yesterday evening Lahore's low-lying districts were drenched by torrential rain that persisted for several hours.
Several districts of the capital city of Punjab were inundated by the current monsoon rains, which peaked at 173mm near Gulshan-e-Ravi.
Pani Wala Talab received 141mm rainfall, Lakshmi Chowk 152mm, Nisthar Town 151mm, Qurtaba Chowk 126mm, Johar Town 156mm, Tajpura 128mm and Iqbal Town 106mm.
It is important to note that torrential rains today in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) led to at least four fatalities and numerous injuries, according to a report released by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).
