The former prime minister and leader of PML-Nunderscores the disqualification of both Nawaz Sharif and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader.
Islamabad: Former Prime Minister and prominent central figure of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Wednesday conveyed his perspective on the upcoming elections, deeming them to be of limited significance.
Shahid Khaqan Abbasi underscored the disqualification of both Nawaz Sharif and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader, highlighting that the election commission had requested the termination of their disqualifications approximately 4.5 months ahead of the general elections. Speaking during a local TV program on Wednesday, Abbasi shared his insights.
"While I hold the opinion that the forthcoming elections may appear to lack substantial impact, it is imperative that the electoral process proceeds as any further delay could potentially exacerbate the situation. I urge all political parties to collectively work towards making the upcoming elections more meaningful and conducive to addressing prevailing issues," Abbasi emphasized.
In regard to his personal plans, Abbasi articulated that he would abstain from contesting as a PML-N candidate if he is not granted a party ticket. He asserted the principle that the issuance of a party ticket should not be coerced upon any individual, highlighting his varied election participation across multiple parties.
Anticipating a timeframe, Abbasi speculated that the general elections are likely to take place in the months of February or March.
Abbasi also alluded to the enigmatic timing of Nawaz Sharif's return, suggesting that only Javed Latif possesses precise information in this regard. Clarifying the context, Abbasi noted that Nawaz Sharif is currently undergoing medical treatment in London and is expected to return upon complete recovery.
Reflecting on the broader political landscape, the former premier emphasized the importance of lifting the lifetime disqualification imposed on politicians to ensure an equitable playing field. He further questioned the legal basis of Nawaz Sharif's disqualification, emphasizing the need for clarity in the application of the law.
Commenting on the appointment of a caretaker prime minister, Abbasi shed light on Shehbaz Sharif's apparent recommendation for the position. Abbasi emphasized the pivotal roles played by the prime minister and the opposition leader in the selection of the caretaker prime minister.
Expressing his dissatisfaction with the 16-month performance of the PDM government, Abbasi criticized the hastiness in passing regulations, emphasizing the importance of thorough debates and deliberations in the legislative process.
