Lahore: Pakistan's legendary bowler Wasim Akram issued a cautionary statement on Monday, asserting that Team India would face a formidable challenge against the Pakistani cricket team, which has cultivated a "habit of winning."

The words of warning come in anticipation of the upcoming Asia Cup 2023, slated to commence on August 30. The much-awaited match between the arch-rivals, India and Pakistan, is scheduled for September 2.

Addressing the media in Dubai, the renowned "Sultan of Swing," Akram, emphasized that the Asia Cup is a prolonged tournament, with no team able to secure a semifinal spot through a single match performance.

This year's edition of the tournament shifts back to the 50-over format after being played as a T20 event in the previous year. Akram welcomed this alteration, underlining that each team must adopt a game-by-game approach and secure victories to ascend in the standings.

Akram highlighted the shifting dynamics due to the format change, stating that teams would necessitate a distinct mindset and enhanced fitness since the matches are now played over 50 overs, as opposed to the previous T20 structure. He underscored the challenge this poses for subcontinent bowlers, as they are now required to deliver 10 overs per game instead of the previous four in T20 matches.

Regarding Pakistan's recent strategies, Akram lauded the team and management for adopting innovative approaches. He affirmed that Pakistan had unveiled their squad for the Asia Cup and that it would be a formidable force for any opponent, including India.

In terms of individual performance, Akram commended Pakistan's skipper, Babar Azam, affirming that Azam was on the right trajectory, honing his captaincy skills while delivering results. Akram also lauded the team's unity, deeming it a positive indicator.

With these remarks, Wasim Akram adds anticipation and excitement to the upcoming Asia Cup clash, setting the stage for an intense contest between the two cricketing giants.

While acknowledging India and Pakistan as significant contenders, Akram stressed the importance of not discounting other teams. He cited the example of the previous edition, wherein an India-Pakistan final was anticipated, yet Sri Lanka emerged as the victors.
