PBC announces countrywide strike against inflation, lawyers’ protection
Pakistan Bar Council Executive Chairman Hasan Raza Pasha asks President Alvi to set a date for general elections within 90 days, without any external consultations.
Islamabad: Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) on Tuesday announced a nationwide strike in the courts on September 9 against inflation and protection of lawyers.
Hasan Raza Pasha, the Executive Chairman of Pakistan Bar Council, expressed concern over the rising inflation, which adversely affected the lives of ordinary citizens.
Pasha urged the President of the country to set a date for general elections within 90 days, without any external consultations.
He emphasized the demand for the elimination of perks and privileges for judges, generals, and bureaucrats, advocating that they should cover their expenses for electricity, petrol, and gas from their own funds rather than the national treasury. Pasha also called for the full implementation of the Lawyers Protection Bill.
Furthermore, Pasha called for an end to illegal raids on lawyers' residences, asserting that lawyers have the legal right to present their clients' positions in court.
Regarding judges facing allegations, Pasha urged prompt action against them and called upon the nominated Chief Justice of Pakistan, Qazi Faiz Isa, to take immediate steps in addressing these references.
Pasha concluded by pointing out that, as per Article 48 of the Constitution, it is the President's prerogative to set the date for elections, and general elections must be announced within 90 days.
