The provincial health department of Punjab has issued a high alert as the disease spreads.

Lahore: A looming threat of the Nipah virus has sent shockwaves across Punjab, triggering a high alert issued by the provincial health department.
With initial symptoms mirroring common ailments, such as cough, breathing difficulties, high fever, tremors, and mental deterioration, the Nipah virus has become a cause for concern in the region.
The virus, which has already made its presence felt in neighboring countries, has prompted the Punjab Health Department to issue stringent guidelines to combat its potential spread.
According to the health department's advisory, Nipah is highly contagious, swiftly transferring from animals to humans and then from person to person.
What makes Nipah particularly menacing is the absence of a vaccine, leaving prevention reliant on early detection and prompt treatment.
The virus was initially traced to animals, including bats and pigs, and subsequently transmitted to humans.
The health department has cautioned that the virus can even be transmitted through contaminated fruit, particularly when bats feed on the same fruit.
To mitigate this risk, thorough washing of all fruits is strongly recommended before consumption.
Moreover, the guidelines emphasize the urgency of seeking immediate medical attention if an individual displays symptoms consistent with Nipah.
Left untreated, patients can slip into a coma within a mere 3 to 4 days, with a staggering 74% fatality rate associated with the virus.
In an effort to contain the potential outbreak, the health department has issued directives to upload data pertaining to suspected Nipah cases onto a dedicated dashboard in a timely manner.
Patients must be isolated, and samples should be promptly sent to laboratories for PCR testing to facilitate swift investigations.
