The inspection, aimed at assessing healthcare facilities and services provided to the community, reveals concerning shortcomings in meeting the healthcare needs of the 60,000 residents served by the hospital.

Karachi: The 36-bed Rural Healthcare Centre (RHC) in Lagigoth, Malir, Karachi, supervised by the People’s Primary Healthcare Initiative (PPHI) Sindh, underwent a comprehensive evaluation by Judicial Member of the Sindh Human Rights Commission (SHRC), Justice (Retired) Arshad Noor Khan, and his team.
The inspection, aimed at assessing healthcare facilities and services provided to the community, revealed concerning shortcomings in meeting the healthcare needs of the 60,000 residents served by the hospital. Despite catering to 800 to 1000 patients regularly, the facility's services were found to be distressingly insufficient, leaving a significant portion of the population without essential healthcare provisions.
Critical deficiencies were highlighted during recent investigations, notably the absence of vital paramedical staff and reports indicating doctors choosing to work elsewhere. This negligence has raised doubts about the institution's commitment to its primary mandate of serving the community, compromising healthcare delivery significantly.
The lack of essential medical personnel and the diversion of doctors to alternative facilities have severely hindered the hospital's ability to provide continuous and comprehensive healthcare services to Lagigoth residents.
Moreover, the caretaker Medical Superintendent underscored multiple challenges faced by the hospital, including severe staff shortages, budgetary constraints, the absence of critical infrastructure such as an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and a worrying surge in theft incidents around the hospital premises, posing risks to both patients and staff.
The evident inadequacy of services at the Lagigoth RHC demands immediate attention and intervention from responsible authorities. Rectifying these deficiencies and ensuring the provision of adequate medical resources and safety measures for the community is an urgent priority.
