Islamabad: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has called upon Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Gohar Ali Khan to appear in the intra-party election case on December 18.

The ECP's five-member bench is set to hear the plea filed by PTI founding member Akbar S. Babar against the intra-party elections at 10 am.

The electoral watchdog has also summoned key PTI figures, including the party’s chief election commissioner Niazullah Niazi, Umar Ayub, Haleem Adil Sheikh, Yasmin Rashid, Ali Amin Gandapur, and RO central secretariat Sardar Masroof.

Previously, the ECP issued a notice to PTI in response to Akbar S. Babar’s appeal challenging the intra-party elections. Babar, a founding member, criticized the elections, labeling them as a mere drama that puts the party and its election symbol, the 'bat,' at stake.

Barrister Gohar Ali Khan recently replaced incarcerated former Prime Minister Imran Khan as the party’s new chairman, having been elected unopposed. The intra-party polls were conducted last Saturday on the ECP's directives, with voters utilizing an online app to cast their votes.

According to PTI election commissioner Niazullah Niazi, former federal minister Omar Ayub Khan was elected as the party's secretary general, and jailed former provincial health minister Yasmin Rashid emerged as the party's Punjab president.
