According to the research paper published in the Journal of Clinical Infectious Diseases, a new coronavirus that spreads from dogs has been discovered.

In a new study, researchers detected a new canine coronavirus in a swab sample obtained from a Malaysian child diagnosed with pneumonia in 2018.

If the virus is confirmed to cause disease in humans, it would be the eighth known human coronavirus and the first to have originated in dogs, the researchers said.

Samples of 301 pneumonia patients were obtained from a hospital in Sarawak, Malaysia, of which eight samples confirmed the canine coronavirus.

Most of them were children under the age of five.

The virus also has a genetically modified ability that was not found in previous canine viruses. This type appeared in 2017 and 2018 in patients with pneumonia treated in the hospital. If confirmed, it would be the eighth type of coronavirus.

Experts say the coronavirus could be dangerous to humans. So far, 7 types of coronaviruses have been identified that can make humans sick.

Researchers say their findings underscore the threat of animal coronaviruses to people, a risk that has become all the more clear in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2.

Of these, four cause fever and the common cold, while three can be fatal, including SARS, MERS and COVID-19.
