Child Pneumonia surge in Punjab sparks urgent measures

Lahore: The recent surge in cold weather has led to a tragic outcome in Punjab, as at least eight more children lost their lives due to pneumonia within the last 24 hours, according to reports from the Punjab health department.

The alarming rise in cases has exacerbated the situation, causing severe shortages of essential medicines in Lahore, the capital of Pakistan's largest province. Concerned about the health and safety of children, the government has taken immediate measures to curb the spread of pneumonia. A ban on morning assemblies in schools has been enforced until January 31.

In response to the escalating health crisis, Caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab, Mohsin Naqvi, declared an extension of winter vacations specifically for prep and nursery students until January 10. This decision follows the heartbreaking news of 36 children succumbing to pneumonia in the first 10 days of January.

The provincial authorities are working diligently to address the challenges posed by the increasing number of pneumonia cases, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts to safeguard the well-being of the youngest members of society.

The total number of reported pneumonia cases in children has soared to a staggering 7,700, with 779 new cases reported on Sunday alone.
