Newly elected senate members take oath
PTI demands that the election of chairman and deputy chairman should be postponed until the presence of KP senators in the House.
Islamabad: The newly elected members of Senate Tuesday took oath.
Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar is performing the duties of the presiding officer in the Senate session.
As soon as the Senate session started, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protested and party leader Ali Zafar said that the session should be postponed until the senators of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa come.
PTI Boycott
PTI yesterday announced to boycott the election of Senate Chairman and Deputy Chairman.
The Tehreek-e-Insaf demands that the election of chairman and deputy chairman should be postponed until the presence of the senators of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the House.
Senate meeting agenda
The 10-point agenda of today's meeting of the Senate has been released according to which the newly elected members will take oath under Article-65 of the Senate Constitution. The members will sign the Senate Roll of Members while the newly elected members of the Senate will be sworn in. After that, the chairman of the Senate will be elected.
According to the agenda, if necessary, the chairman of the Senate will be elected by secret ballot. The results of the election of the chairman of the senate will be announced, after which the newly elected chairman of the senate will take oath. Then the election of the deputy chairman of the senate will be carried out.
If necessary, the Deputy Chairman of the Senate will be elected by secret ballot, after the results, the newly elected Deputy Chairman of the Senate will be sworn in.
In the Senate session, 37 newly elected members will take oath as senators today, in which six senators elected in the by-election will also take oath.
Apart from this, 11 senators will not take oath due to the absence of Senate elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
18 members of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), 14 of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), three of Jamat-Ulema-Islami (JUI), two members supported by PTI, and one member of Mutahidda Qoumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), Awami National Party (ANP) and National Party each will take oath as senators while three newly elected independent members will also take oath as senators.
Party Position in Senate
The Senate currently has 42 members in which PTI is the largest party with 17 senators while PPP has 10, PML-N six, JUI (F) three, Balochistan National Party (BNP) one, MQM-P two, Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) one, Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) four, ANP two and two independent senators.
