FIA DG Ahmed Ishaq Jahangir removed over Greece boat tragedy

Islamabad: The government removed Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Director General Ahmed Ishaq Jahangir from his position on Wednesday, amid ongoing actions against other FIA officials.

According to a notification from the Cabinet Secretariat, Jahangir, a senior officer in the Interior Division, was transferred and posted as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Establishment Division. This decision took effect immediately, and Jahangir will remain in this role until further orders. When an officer is made an OSD, their duties are suspended indefinitely without explanation.

The FIA had recently dismissed 13 of its officials and halted the promotions of three constables connected to the tragic boat incident off the coast of Greece in December 2024. The tragedy resulted in the deaths of five Pakistani citizens, and more than 80 people, including minors, were on board the capsized boats in the Mediterranean.

Earlier, 37 officials suspected of being involved in the incident were also dismissed. The FIA confirmed that these actions are being taken under the orders of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The latest move against the 13 officials came after Jahangir led internal proceedings against them. A spokesperson for the FIA confirmed that eight constables, two head constables, one inspector, and two sub-inspectors were fired. The FIA also stopped the promotions of three constables.

Jahangir had been appointed as the interim FIA Director General by the caretaker government in January 2024.
