Poshmark is introducing AI-generated product listings

Resale platform Poshmark is launching Smart List AI, an automated product listing tool for sellers, the company announced today. The tool has been in beta testing since last fall and uses sellers’ photos to generate details like the type of product, the size and brand, the style and color, and other details, as well as a title and description for the listing. Like other platforms that have introduced AI listing tools, the promise is that Smart List AI will streamline the process for sellers and cut down on the amount of time it takes to list items. And like eBay’s feature, Poshmark’s tool will depend on sellers actually confirming that the information is correct — in the secondhand market, accurate details for things like the brand, size, and condition of an item are essential. In my experience on eBay, at least, AI-generated descriptions are not very helpful; they mostly read like marketing fluff. What’s actually helpful is a detailed list of any flaws, wear and tear, or precise measurements — things that an AI listing tool wouldn’t be able to generate. Retailers, including Shopify and Amazon, have pushed generative AI shopping products on both the merchant and consumer ends. And whether its AI-generated product listings or entire garments “created” using AI, the aim is often the same: to increase the scale of production, but not necessarily improve the quality. Smart List AI will be available to Poshmark users on iOS in February.
