Seizure of his properties has been ordered in cheque bounce case


Dhaka: A Bangladeshi court has ordered to seize the assets of cricketer and former Awami League member of parliament Shakib Al Hasan.
According to foreign media reports, Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziauddin Rahman on Monday ordered the seizure of Shakib’s properties in the cheque bounce case.
Shakib had set up a shrimp farm in Satkhira, Bangladesh in 2016, which has been inactive since 2021. The said cheques were to repay a loan taken from the bank by Shakib’s company, but the cheques bounced due to insufficient funds.
According to the report, in October 2024, the Bangladesh Bank issued a legal notice on the issue of bounced cheques and later filed a case against Shakib and three other officials of his company on December 24.
In January, the court issued arrest warrants for Shakib in this case.
It is pertinent to note that Shakib is out of Bangladesh after receiving death threats due to political unrest and his association with the Awami League.
He is also a named suspect in the murder of a young man during anti-government protests last year.
