Divorce trial turns violent: Former boxer assaults husband

(Web Desk): A viral video showing former world boxing champion Saweety Boora assaulting her husband, former Indian Kabaddi captain and Arjuna awardee Deepak Hooda, inside a police station in Hisar has sparked a legal battle between the couple.

In the video, Boora is seen sitting with Hooda and others at the police station before suddenly getting up and hitting him. This incident led Hooda to file a complaint the next day, resulting in an FIR (First Information Report) being filed against Boora on March 16.

However, the legal issue had already started earlier, as Boora had filed a complaint against Hooda in February, accusing him of dowry harassment. Hooda faces charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including causing hurt, criminal breach of trust, and intimidation. Hisar SP Shashank Kumar Sawan confirmed the FIR registration.

Boora, who won a gold medal at the 2023 Women’s World Boxing Championships, claims Hooda and his family harassed her over dowry. She says that her family spent about INR 1 crore on their wedding, including borrowing INR 11.59 lakh to buy a Fortuner SUV to meet Hooda’s demand just before their marriage.

Hooda, who was part of the Indian Kabaddi team that won gold at the 2016 South Asian Games, denies these accusations. He says Boora distanced herself from him after he received the Arjuna Award in December 2024. He also accuses Boora and her sister of taking gold and cash worth lakhs from his Rohtak flat in February when he was in Delhi. He filed a complaint in Rohtak, accusing them of mental harassment, intimidation, and cheating.

The Rohtak police have referred the financial allegations to the Economic Offences Wing for further investigation.

Sources suggest that the couple’s marriage problems worsened after Hooda lost the 2024 Assembly elections, where he contested from Rohtak on a BJP ticket. Hooda says an attempt to reconcile in February led to him being abused by Boora’s father and uncle.

While the Hisar police are investigating Boora’s complaint, the Rohtak police are handling Hooda’s case. Boora has not commented, and Hooda has called the matter a “family issue.” The couple married in July 2022.
