Rawalpindi declares water emergency as dam levels drop

(Web Desk): Authorities in Rawalpindi have declared a water emergency for the second time this year, as water levels in local dams drop dangerously low and demand continues to rise.

The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) has warned that Khanpur Dam has only enough water to last one month, while Rawal Dam may be able to meet the city’s needs for up to three months—if current conditions continue.

WASA Managing Director Muhammad Saleem Ashraf said that daily water demand in the city has risen to over 50 million gallons, but supply remains stuck at around 30 million gallons. He also noted that the underground water table has fallen to 650 feet and is not recovering due to lower-than-normal rainfall.

The city had already declared a drought emergency in February. Now, officials say continued dry weather is making the situation worse, forcing greater reliance on tube wells and backup sources.

Ashraf said commercial activity and fast population growth are using up water faster than it can be replaced. He announced that legal action will be taken against those wasting water and urged the public to save water immediately.

WASA is asking all residents to conserve water to avoid a serious crisis.
