Youm-e-Takbeer commemorates May 28, 1998 when Pakistan responded to India's nuclear tests by conducting its own nuclear detonations

Islamabad: The Shehbaz-led government has announced a countrywide public holiday on May 28 in observance of Youm-e-Takbeer.
A day earlier, the Sindh government had also declared May 28 as a public holiday to mark Youm-e-Takbeer. In this regard, all provincial government offices, local councils, and other public institutions will remain closed.
The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) has likewise announced a public holiday on May 28 in connection with Youm-e-Takbeer.
The PML-N government had already included May 28 in the list of official public holidays in December 2024. A notification for the same was also issued last year, declaring it an official holiday.
Youm-e-Takbeer commemorates the day—May 28, 1998—when Pakistan responded to India's nuclear tests by conducting its own nuclear detonations in the Chagai district of Balochistan.
With these tests, Pakistan became the first nuclear power in the Muslim world and the seventh globally, a milestone that the nation observes annually as Youm-e-Takbeer.
