Gen Munir promoted to Field Marshal – What does the title mean?

(Web Desk): The federal government of Pakistan has promoted Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir to the rank of Field Marshal. The decision was made in recognition of his outstanding leadership during “Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos,” a military operation launched in response to India’s unprovoked aggression earlier this month.

This promotion was approved during a federal cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. A government statement said General Munir earned the honorary title due to his brave and strategic leadership, which helped ensure Pakistan’s security and successfully respond to enemy actions.

Field Marshal is the highest honorary rank in the army, symbolized by five stars. It is above the rank of General but usually does not involve operational command. Instead, it is awarded to acknowledge exceptional service, leadership, and strategic achievements. The rank does not carry any additional constitutional authority.

General Asim Munir is now only the second person in Pakistan’s history to be promoted to Field Marshal. The first was former President Mohammad Ayub Khan in 1959.

General Asim Munir has had a distinguished military career. He joined the Pakistan Army through the Mangla Officers Training School and was commissioned into the Frontier Force Regiment. He served as commander of the Northern Areas Force at the rank of brigadier. Later, he became Director-General of Military Intelligence in 2017, and in 2018, he was appointed as Director-General of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

He went on to serve as Corps Commander in Gujranwala for two years and later worked as the Quartermaster General at the General Headquarters (GHQ). In November 2022, he was appointed as the Chief of Army Staff.

General Munir is the only COAS in Pakistan’s history to have led both Military Intelligence and ISI. He is also the first army chief to be awarded the prestigious Sword of Honour during training.
