French parliament approves right-to-die bill amid debate

(Web Desk): France’s parliament has given initial approval to a controversial yet historic Assisted Dying Bill, which would allow individuals suffering from severe, incurable illnesses and unbearable pain to legally request medical assistance to end their lives.

The bill was passed in the French National Assembly with 305 votes in favor and 199 against. President Emmanuel Macron hailed the move as “a major step on the path of fraternity,” though it continues to face strong opposition from conservative parties.

According to the proposed law, eligible individuals must be over the age of 18, French citizens or permanent residents, and in the final stage of an incurable illness causing unbearable suffering. The process includes several safeguards: a voluntary request from the patient, approval by a medical team, and a mandatory review period.

If a patient is unable to self-administer the life-ending medication, it can be given with assistance from a doctor or nurse. The medication may be taken at home, in a nursing facility, or in a hospital.

The bill will now move to the French Senate for further debate, although the National Assembly retains the final say in case of disagreement.

Recent surveys indicate that 90% of the French public supports the legislation, with public approval having steadily grown over the past two decades.
