Pakistan Railways is also finalising the outsourcing of 200 freight wagons to the private sector to meet growing industrial and energy demand

Islamabad: Pakistan Railways has launched a plan to restore several old railway routes that have been closed for years, aiming to strengthen connectivity and boost commercial activity.
According to documents available with WealthPK, the Sibi-Harnai section, shut since 2006, has already been restored. The ministry has surveyed seven more routes to assess their practicality and viability. A feasibility study has been prepared for Mari Indus-Lakki Marwat-Bannu, Mandra-Bhaun, Faisalabad-Jaranwala, Fort Abbas-Katal Amara, Tando Adam-Tharu Shah, Mirpur Khas-Nawabshah, and Bostan-Zhob.
Plans also include new rail links. One project will connect Thar coal mines to Chhor station to support energy and industrial transport.
A ministry official told WealthPK the department monitors route performance, demand, and operational feasibility. "Decisions on future freight or passenger expansions will be strategic, aligned with evolving commercial needs and logistics goals," the official said.
Pakistan Railways is also finalising the outsourcing of 200 freight wagons to the private sector to meet growing industrial and energy demand. In the past, the organisation has maintained cargo express services from Karachi to Multan, Faisalabad, and Lahore; and Kundian freight operations between Quetta and Taftan.
