Tokyo: Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka has suffered defeated at home, a shocker considering her history, as Czech Marketa Vondrousova earned a straight-set win in Tokyo.
The Olympic starlet has been one of the prominent champions of the Games in Japans most populous capital. Osaka was given the honor tocommence the ceremony last week by lighting the Olympic cauldron.
The professional tennis player could not keep up appearances as she unable to win the medal, losing 6-1 6-4 to the world number 42 in the third round.
"I definitely feel like there was a lot of pressure for this," said the four time Grand Slam champion adding, “I think its maybe because I haven't played in the Olympics before and for the first year it was a bit much.”
Previously Osaka, the reigning US Open and Australian Open champion, had won 25 of her 26 matches on a tennis court.
This tournament was Osaka’s first after she got out of the French Open in June, the reason of her withdrawal being long bouts of depression which she had been suffering since winning her first Grand Slam title in 2018.
"I think I'm glad with how I played, with taking that break that I had," she said adding, “I've taken long breaks before and I've managed to do well. I'm not saying that I did bad right now, but I do know that my expectations were a lot higher. I feel like my attitude wasn't that great because I don't really know how to cope with that pressure so that's the best that I could have done in this situation."
With victory in the first two rounds, Osaka was building up for a gold-medal bid, but she made 32 unforced errors in a neglected performance against the former French Open finalist Marketa Vondrousova.
