NDMA issues flood alert amid heavy rain forecast from Sept 1–3

(Web Desk): The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a flood alert for multiple regions from September 1 to 3 due to the likelihood of heavy rainfall.

In its alert, the NDMA stated that significant increases in the flow of eastern rivers are expected during this period as a result of potential rainfall.

According to the alert, the Sutlej River currently has an extraordinary flow of 253,068 cusecs, and due to expected rain in upper regions and water releases from dams, an additional 300,000 cusecs flood surge is likely.

The Ravi River at the Jassar point presently shows a normal flow of 60,094 cusecs, but due to releases from Thein Dam and anticipated rainfall, the flow is expected to rise to 150,000 cusecs.

Possible rainfall in upper areas may cause flooding in tributaries connected to the Ravi River, including Baein, Basantar, and Dek.

The Chenab River at Marala is currently at a low-level flow of 94,728 cusecs, but heavy rainfall in Jammu and Indian-administered Kashmir as well as water release from upper dams like Salal, Baglihar, and Dul Hasti may significantly increase water levels.

The NDMA warns that the inflow of rainwater and dam releases could lead to high-level flooding at Marala, with severe flooding also expected in tributaries of the Chenab River, including Jammu Tawi, Munawar Tawi, and Palku.

The alert further states there is a risk of low-lying and riverside areas becoming submerged, possible breaches in embankments, and damage to crops and residential settlements.

The NDMA has urged local residents, farmers, and relevant departments to remain on high alert and take timely preventive measures.

The statement also noted that, as per the Prime Minister’s directives, the NDMA is closely monitoring all rescue and relief operations.
