Portugal is not the first country to announce the recognition of Palestine as a state

Lisbon: After Britain, France, Australia, Canada, and many other countries, Portugal has also announced its recognition of Palestine as a state.
Portugal's Foreign Ministry said that the official announcement of the recognition of Palestine as a state will be made on September 21.
This announcement comes at a time when several countries will officially announce their recognition of Palestine as a state at the United Nations General Assembly meeting to be held this month.
Portugal's Foreign Minister had said during his visit to Britain this week that his country is considering recognizing the Palestinian state, but now the Foreign Ministry has announced the recognition of Palestine as a state.
It is pertinent to note that Portugal is not the first country to announce the recognition of Palestine as a state.
Earlier, France, Britain, Australia, Canada, and Belgium have also decided to recognize Palestine as a state, and its formal announcement is expected at the United Nations General Assembly this month.
