‘Tax is being imposed for several reasons, but primarily in the interest of national security’

(Web Desk): The United States has further increased pressure on India by announcing a 100% tariff on pharmaceutical imports.
According to news agencies, the US has also imposed a 50% tariff on kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities, 30% on furniture, and 25% on heavy-duty trucks.
In addition, the US has officially declared a 100% tariff on medicines.
Former President Donald Trump, in a statement on his social media platform Truth Social, announced that starting October 1, a 100% tariff will be imposed on pharmaceutical imports into the US.
Trump stated that setting up pharmaceutical plants within the US would be exempt from these tariffs. He added that the tax is being imposed for several reasons, but primarily in the interest of national security.
This new wave of tariffs is expected to significantly impact India, as it is one of the world’s largest exporters of pharmaceuticals. More than one-third of the medicines used in the US are imported from India.
According to a report by India Today, India exports nearly $10 billion worth of pharmaceutical products to the US annually.
It is worth noting that relations between the US and India have cooled in recent months. The US had already imposed a 50% tariff on Indian imports, which has affected Indian exports and added to its economic challenges.
