Karachi: At least 20 people were killed and eight injured after a powerful thunderstorm swept through Karachi on Wednesday night, police said.

Torrential rain and strong winds battered the city, causing fatalities largely due to collapsing walls and falling debris, as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported that a westerly weather system was affecting much of the country.

Police said that 13 people died in a wall collapse in Saeedabad, while two others were killed in a similar incident in Quaidabad. Two individuals were also injured in a wall collapse in Keamari.

In separate incidents, roof collapses claimed one life and injured three people in Gulistan-i-Jauhar, and resulted in one death and two injuries in Mominabad, Orangi Town. Another fatality occurred in Malir’s Sukhan area due to a roof collapse, while in Clifton, one person was killed and another injured after being struck by debris.

Khan added that one person died after being struck by lightning in Shah Latif Town.

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab said 55mm of rainfall had been recorded overnight, adding that the city remained largely operational.

“Most roads are clear; only areas under development are facing minor issues. Where rainwater has accumulated, instructions have been issued for its prompt drainage,” he said.
