Woman falls prey to ‘Acid attack’ in Karachi
Karachi: A man allegedly threw acid on his wife's face and body on Thursday near Qayyumabad in Karachi, GNN reported quoting police sources.
The woman was rushed to the hospital and doctors declared her condition critical.
Police officials carried out a series of raids but the accused went into hiding immediately after committing the offence.
Police department, however, registered a first information report (FIR) against the accused and an investigation is underway.
Reportedly, the couple have three children and the woman was upset with her husband following which she was staying at her maternal house.
“Two children also suffered minor injuries from the acid attack,” said police.
The case has been registered by the survivor’s brother identified as Amir under Section 336B (Punishment for hurt by corrosive substance) of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).
Under Section 144 of the PPC, public dealing of acid and other corrosive substances is banned. Offenders are punishable under Section 336(B), which has maximum life imprisonment. The minimum is not less than 14 years with a fine of Rs1 million.
According to the Acid Survivors Foundation, the total number of acid attacks victims from 2007 to 2018 was 1,186 in country.
In 2017, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan says that 31 acid attacks were reported. Nearly 67 cases of such attacks were reported in 2018 and 34 in 2019.
