The Prime Minister of New Zealand Jacinda Ardern apologized for what happened while addressing a news conference.
"This was a violent attack, it was senseless, and I am so sorry it happened."
Adern noted that the guy was a Sri Lankan national and under round-the-clock surveillance, and police was able to kill him within sixty seconds of the attack.
She further added that the instigator was a supporter of “ISIS ideology”.
The Police Commissioner of New Zealand, Andre Coster articulated that the attacker gleaned the knife within the store.
“He was a lone actor,” noted the commissioner.
Injured individuals were instantly transferred to a hospital, whereas three are in a critical situation.
New Zealand’s security agencies are on high alert since the Christchurch incident in 2019.
