TikTok overtakes YouTube’s average watch time in US, UK
In United Kingdom (UK) and United States (US) the Chinese app, TikTok is now being used for longer as users are spending more time on the platform than YouTube, according to app analytics firm App Annie.
According to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), the report suggests that TikTok is upending the streaming and social landscape. YouTube, however, reigns supreme in overall time spent, but TikTok dominates per user time.
For years, YouTube has been the de facto king of video platforms in Western countries sucking up more time than any of its competitors.
As per data tracked by Annie, individual users now spend more time on TikTok than on YouTube, on average.
YouTube’s monthly user base is estimated to be over 2 billion. By contrast, TikTok is estimated to have roughly 700 million to 1 billion monthly users.
The Chinese-owned company, TikTok has rapidly grown in popularity over the past two years.
TikTok was officially launched in China as Douyin in 2016 and internationally as TikTok in late 2017. It hit one billion downloads in January 2019 and has grown rapidly since.
In July 2021, the platform hit three billion downloads.
