Joplin: Three people were killed while over 50 passengers were injured in United States after seven cars of an Amtrak train went off the rails in north-central Montana, according to an official.

As per details, the train derailed at 4 pm on Saturday near Joplin. Reportedly, the train had about 147 passengers and 13 crew members onboard.

The train was headed for the western city of Seattle from Chicago and consisted of two locomotives and 10 cars.

The cause of incident was not immediately clear, however, the National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the accident.

An official of the Liberty County Sheriff's Office, people trapped aboard soon after the derailment were all taken off the train.

“Amtrak is working with the local authorities to transport injured passengers, and safely evacuate all other passengers,” it added.

Earlier in 2018, three people died after an Amtrak train traveled on the wrong track in South Carolina and slammed into a parked freight train.

That same year, a train carrying Republican members of Congress hit a garbage truck in rural Virginia, killing one passenger in the truck.

In 2015, an Amtrak train that had been traveling at more than 100 miles per hour, twice the speed limit, careened off a curve in Philadelphia, leaving eight dead and over 200 injured.
