Baghdad: A drone laden with explosives targeted the residence of Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi in Baghdad early on Sunday in what the Iraqi military called an ‘attempted assassination’ but said Kadhimi escaped unhurt.
A statement from the Iraqi military said that the attack targeted Kadhimi's residence and that he was in "good health". It provided no further detail.
Kadhimi's official Twitter account said the prime minister was safe and called for calm.
As per details, seven members of Kadhimi's personal protection who were stationed outside his residence had been injured.
The attack, carried out by an armed drone laden with explosives— came after protests in Baghdad over the result of a general election last month turned violent.
As per officials the drone strike actually took place in the Green Zone, a heavily fortified region in Baghdad.
In recent weeks, some pro-Iran groups have staged demonstrations near the Green Zone, protesting against the results of a general election which dealt a blow to their parliamentary power.
As far as the residents of Baghdad are concerned, no reports of injuries have arrived so far.
The groups leading protests and complaints about the result of the October vote are heavily-armed Iran-backed militias which lost much of their parliamentary power in the election.
They have alleged voting and vote-counting irregularities.
Moreover, Western diplomats based nearby in the Green Zone said they heard explosions and gunfire in the area.
It is not immediately clear who is behind the attack on the residence, nor has any group claimed responsibility yet.
