The president of the European Parliament, David Sassoli died Tuesday in Italy, the parliament’s office in Washington said in a post on Twitter. He was 65.
The office said that Mr. Sassoli had died in the Italian town of Aviano.
No cause of death was immediately available.
He was hospitalized with severe pneumonia during a plenary session of the Parliament in September and later returned to Italy to recover.
Reportedly, Mr. Sassoli was hospitalized again on December 26 because his immune system was not functioning normally, Mr. Sassoli’s spokesman, Roberto Cuillo, said on Monday on social media.
"The president of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, passed away at 1.15 a.m. on January 11 at the hospital in Aviano, Italy, where he was hospitalized," his spokesman, Roberto Cuillo said on Twitter.
