New Delhi: India's renowned cricket player Virat Kohli Wednesday became the highest run-scorer in Twenty 20 World Cup history when he reached 16 against Bangladesh in Adelaide.

Virat Kohli scored a fifty in the match between India and Bangladesh, crossing Mahela Jayawardene's record of 1,016 runs. 

Kohli beat former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene's total of 1,016 runs in his 23rd innings in T20 World Cups. Jayawardene set his mark off 31 innings.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) tweeted: "MILESTONE ALERT".  

Kohli, who boasts of an average of more than 80 and a strike rate of over 130 in T20 World Cups, reached the milestone during India's Super 12 match against Bangladesh.

The 33-year-old is playing his 113th T20 international for India since making his debut in the shorter format in 2010.

The cricketer has 12 half-centuries to his credit across all editions of the T20 World Cup, including two in the ongoing edition. He is also the highest run-getter in all T20 internationals ahead of compatriot Rohit Sharma (3811), New Zealand's Martin Guptill (3531) and Pakistan skipper Babar Azam (3239).
