Typhoon Mawar approaches Northern Philippines, raises flood, landslide concerns

Batanes: Typhoon Mawar, also known as Betty, is heading toward the northern provinces of the Philippines, prompting officials to take precautionary measures.

With sustained winds of 155 kph (96 mph) and gusts of up to 190 kph (118 mph), the typhoon is expected to slow down near the province of Batanes, raising concerns about dangerous tidal surges, flash floods, and landslides.

Authorities have started evacuating hundreds of villagers, closed schools and offices, and imposed a no-sail ban.

Emergency shelters have been prepared, and disaster response teams are on standby.

Flights and sea travel have been affected, and residents in flood-prone areas are being relocated.
