Biparjoy changes direction, likely to hit coastal areas by tonight

Karachi: Meteorological Department Thursday issued a new alert regarding cyclone Biparjoy that it will is 275 km away from Karachi and will hit the Gujarat coast near Keti Bandar by tonight, affecting Pakistani coastal areas as well.

According to details, the storm is 285 km from Thatta and 200 km away from Keti Bandar.

Department of Meteorology stated that the effects of the hurricane will come on the coastal belt of Sindh, Keti Bandar. The height of the waves in the sea has increased, therefore the residents have been evacuated from the low-lying areas of Keti Bandar.

According to Department of Meteorology, Karachi will remain in the impact of the cyclone for two to three days, strong winds and 50 to 60 mm of rain are likely in Karachi today.

Winds are blowing at a speed of 120 to 140 km per hour around the storm, with gusts of 160 km per hour. Waves of more than 30 feet in the center of the storm are making the storm unusual, with sea surface temperatures of 29 to 30 degrees Celsius proving favorable for the storm.

Met Department predicted that high waves, strong winds and high temperatures are playing a positive role in making the storm stronger.

Eight to 12 feet high waves will rise on Sindh Keti Bandar and Karachi coast today. As the storm threatens to submerge the low-lying settlements of Keti Bunder, fishermen should not venture out into the open sea until June 17, it warned.

On the other hand, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said that Biparjoy is 181 km from Keti Bandar, 247 km from Karachi and 267 km from Thatta.
