President Alvi urges PM, Raja Riaz to finalise interim PM name

Islamabad: President Dr Arif Alvi on Friday asked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and outgoing Leader of the Opposition Raja Riaz to propose a name for appointment of interim PM by tomorrow August 12.

Details indicate that the president asked for names in a letter to the opposition leader and the prime minister.

President Alvi stated in a letter that according to Article 224A of the Constitution, PM Shehbaz and Raja Riaz had three days following the dissolution of the National Assembly to suggest a name for the appointment of a caretaker prime minister.

“Under proviso to Article 224 (1A) of the Constitution, the president appoints caretaker prime minister in consultation with Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition in the outgoing National Assembly”, he added.

President said that on August 9 the premier offered him advice to dissolve the National Assembly in accordance with Article 58 (1) of the Constitution, which he authorized and did the same day.

“As provided in Article 224 (1A) of Constitution of Pakistan, Prime Minister and leader of Opposition in the outgoing National Assembly may propose a suitable person for appointment of care-taker prime minister not later than August 12, 2023,” the president added.
