Arshad Nadeem wins first medal for Pakistan at World Athletics Championships
Arshad Nadeem also became the first athlete to win a medal for Pakistan at the World Athletics Championships.
Budapest: Pakistan's javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem created history by bringing Pakistan its first medal in the World Athletics Championships.
Arshad Nadeem won the silver medal in the javelin throw event of the championships in Budapest, Hungary, finishing second by less than half a meter to gold medalist Neeraj Chopra of India.
In the javelin throw final of the World Athletics Championships, Arshad Nadeem threw 87.82 meters in the third round, which was his best throw among all six throws, but he could not surpass India's Neeraj Chopra who threw 88.17 meters.
Arshad Nadeem threw javelin 74.80 in the first throw, 82.81 in the second throw, 87.82 in the third throw, 87.15 in the fourth throw and 81.86 meters in the sixth throw. His throw was called a foul in the fifth inning.
Arshad and Neeraj were in contention for the gold medal until the last throw, when fourth-placed Javelin Weber threw his final throw 79.01m, securing the medal for Arshad Nadeem and then Jacob Wedledge also failed to overtake Arshad Nadeem.
In the last round, Arshad Nadeem had to throw more than 88.17 meters, but he did not succeed in this and his last throw was 81.86 meters, due to which Neeraj and Arshad were declared as the rightful for the gold medal.
Arshad Nadeem also became the first athlete to win a medal for Pakistan at the World Athletics Championships.
Czech Republic's Jakub Wedledge has been declared the bronze medalist. Arshad Nadeem's throw of 87.82 meters is his best throw this season.
It is pertinent to note that Arshad Nadeem won the gold medal by throwing 90.18 meters in Birmingham last year and became the first South Asian athlete to throw more than 90 meters. His throw is still the second highest by any Asian player.
On the other hand, national athlete Arshad Nadeem's house in Mian Chanu is celebrating his win. A big screen was installed in the house to watch the final match. On this occasion, his friends and family watched the final match together.
Arshad's mother prayed for her son's success.
Apart from this, the final of the World Athletics Championship was also shown on a big screen in Liberty Chowk, Lahore. There was a wave of joy in the public when Arshad won the silver medal.
