Islamabad: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Friday made it clear that a probe into assets involving interim Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar was closed on "merit" following a careful examination of the charges.

The charges against the current interim premier, according to NAB officials, could not be proven because there was insufficient evidence presented during the inquiry.

The complaint against the interim PM had nothing to do with the NAB modifications, according to the officials.

The clarification came hours after a three-member of Supreme Court panel, by a vote of 2-1, ordered the restoration of corruption proceedings against public officials that had been dropped after changes to the NAB laws.

According to NAB sources, the anti-graft watchdog had started an investigation into PM Kakar because of his assets in Quetta, but because the claims were unfounded, the investigation was closed on the basis of "merit".

The reliable sources added that the "matter" had been resolved prior to his appointment as interim prime minister.
