ECP Secretary Omar Hamid Khan resigns from his post
The ECP rejects rumours, saying that the secretary is on the medical rest and will resume his duties soon after recovery.
Islamabad: Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Secretary Omar Hamid Khan resigned from his position, citing health issues, the sources privy to the development said on Sunday.
The sources said that Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan did not accept resignation of Omar Hamid Khan.
The development took place at the moment when the general elections are around the corners.
The sources said that ECP Special Secretary Dr. Syed Asif Hussain refuted the PTI's allegation of being denied a level playing field for election-related activities.
In response to the PTI's plea for contempt proceedings against the electoral body, the ECP urged the Supreme Court to dismiss the contempt petition with costs. The PTI's plea sought contempt of court proceedings against the ECP secretary, inspector generals of police (IGPs), chief secretaries of the four provinces, and the secretary of the interior ministry for "non-compliance" of the SC order passed on December 22, 2023.
On the other hand, the election commission clarified the situation while rejecting the rumors.
The ECP spokesperson stated that Secretary Omar Hamid Khan is currently on medical rest owing to health issues and would resume his duties after recovering.
Special Secretary Dr. Syed Asif Hussain is looking after the issues related to the elections.
The electoral body also reiterated that it is fully operational and facing no obstacles in performing its tasks. It said that all ECP offices remain functional even during the holidays leading up to the general polls.
