ECP notifies 93 MPAs as PTI lawmakers
Last week, PTI submitted its list of MPAs for reserved seats in three provinces
Islamabad: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday officially recognized 93 Members of Provincial Assemblies (MPAs) from three provinces as PTI legislators, following the Supreme Court's July 12 ruling on reserved seats.
The Supreme Court's decision, reached with an 8-5 majority, confirmed PTI's eligibility for reserved seats for women and non-Muslims in national and provincial assemblies. This ruling effectively revived PTI's presence in the legislature as a parliamentary party.
All 13 judges agreed that PTI qualifies as a parliamentary party. The majority opinion noted that 39 of the 80 Members of the National Assembly (MNAs) identified by the ECP as PTI representatives indeed belonged to the party.
Consequently, the ECP decided to allocate 39 National Assembly seats to PTI, while the remaining 41 seats were deemed independent since the candidates did not declare party affiliation before the elections.
Last week, PTI submitted its list of MPAs for reserved seats in three provinces, without revealing their names. Today's ECP notification granted PTI 29 seats in the Punjab Assembly, 6 seats in the Sindh Assembly, and 58 seats in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, in line with the Supreme Court's order.
