Dhaka: After resigning from the Prime Minister’s position in Bangladesh and fleeing to India, Sheikh Hasina Wajed has blamed the United States for toppling her government.
Due to violent protests against the student quota system, Sheikh Hasina resigned from her position on August 5th and sought refuge in India after fleeing the country.
Currently, in Bangladesh, the process of removing Sheikh Hasina’s supporters from state institutions is underway. Yesterday, students surrounded the Supreme Court and forced the Chief Justice and six political judges to resign.
Now, for the first time after being ousted from power, Sheikh Hasina has spoken out, accusing the United States of overthrowing her government.
According to Indian media, Sheikh Hasina claimed in a message to close associates that the U.S. wanted to establish dominance over the Bay of Bengal and gain control of Saint Martin’s Island.
She said, “When I didn’t hand over control of the island to the U.S., my government was overthrown. I resigned so that no more students or public lives would be lost.”
Sheikh Hasina claimed that she could have remained in power if she had relinquished sovereignty over the island and allowed the U.S. to dominate the Bay of Bengal.
She further stated that many party leaders are being killed and workers are being harassed, which is distressing to hear. She added, “I will return home soon, and I am praying for the bright future of the country, for which my father and family sacrificed their lives.”
Clarifying the term “Razakar,” Sheikh Hasina said that she never used the term for students, but her words were twisted and presented incorrectly.
It is noteworthy that after Sheikh Hasina fled, an interim government has been established in Bangladesh, headed by Nobel Laureate Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
