Bangkok: The Parliament of Thailand on Friday elected Paetongtarn Shinawatra, aged 37, as the country’s new Prime Minister.

Paetongtarn, the youngest daughter of prominent businessman Thaksin Shinawatra, was nominated by the Pheu Thai Party. She secured the position with over 314 votes from the 493-member House, making her Thailand’s third female Prime Minister and the youngest to ever hold the role.

Former Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont, who spent years in exile following the 2006 military coup, returned to Thailand last year, ran for office, and was elected.

However, he was removed by the court within a year due to accusations of violating his oath by appointing a convicted individual to his cabinet and engaging in ethical misconduct.
