LHC prohibits fixed charges on electricity bills

Lahore: The Lahore High Court (LHC) issued an injunction on a petition against imposing fixed charges on electricity bills.

Justice Muhammad Raza Qureshi of LHC heard the petition of nine companies against fixed charges in electricity bills. Federal government and Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) among others have been made parties in the petition. Khawaja Waseem Abbas advocate appeared in the court on behalf of the petitioners.

It was argued by the petitioners that LESCO has imposed fixed charges on electricity bills. No approval of fixed charges imposed by LESCO has been obtained, the approval of the Cabinet and National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is necessary to impose fixed charges.

It was further stated in the application that LESCO has sent a bill of Rs3.2 million without consuming electricity, last month it was 5.7 million rupees and this month it sent a bill of Rs15.6 million. The court should order LESCO to cancel the fixed charges.

Later, the Court issued an injunction on a petition against the imposition of fixed charges on electricity bills.
