President Zardari signs new rules for Islamabad rallies
The new law sets clear guidelines for public gatherings
Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari on Saturday approved the Peaceful Protest and Public Order Act 2024, bringing major changes to the regulations for rallies and processions in the capital.
The new law, passed earlier by the National Assembly, sets clear guidelines for public gatherings.
Under the new rules, rallies and protests must be held in specific areas designated by the government. Unauthorized gatherings will be deemed illegal, with severe penalties: first-time offenders could face up to three years in prison, and repeat violators could be jailed for up to 10 years.
Political parties wanting to hold rallies must get permission from the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Islamabad at least seven days in advance. If permission is denied, appeals can be made to the Chief Commissioner and, if necessary, to the Home Secretary.
The District Magistrate will oversee security assessments before granting approvals, and all rallies must occur in the government-designated areas. Organizers must provide detailed information about their event when applying for permits.
This new legislation aims to address security concerns related to large, unauthorized gatherings and ensure public safety in Islamabad.
